Background: Bradykinin receptor B2 is a constitutively expressed G protein-coupled receptor. In guinea pigs, the B2 receptor is expressed in the small intestine on a majority of the ganglion cells in the submucosal and myenteric plexuses. The activation of the B2 receptor by the ligand bradykinin stimulates neurogenic chloride secretion in the guinea pig ileum through COX increasing PGE2 production. Recent studies on pregnant guinea pigs, revealed the importance B2 plays in regulating blood pressure and trophoblast invasion during placental development. These results suggest that B2 may be a promising target for treating abnormal placentation and related disorders.
